One Children's Workforce

From Hanna...
CYPP 2010 - working better together

National Children's Bureau (NCB) has awarded us a grant to assess VCS engagement in the planning, strategy, delivery and evaluation of services for children, young people and their families.  This opportunity has come as a result of a NCB's Celia Watson's presentation at the November conference, where (once the dust settled) there was overall agreement across all sectors - local authorities, health, commissioners and the VCS - to undertake the process using a joint approach.

To keep the consultation real we will focus on Children and Young People's Plan - CYPP - 2010. It means that a nationally agreed protocol linked to a well renowned national agency NCB acts as a framework for good Children's Trust VCS practice and how that can be embedded in the arrangements.

Find out what it means to get involved - contact Hanna and have your input in the process

What can the VCS do to get involved?

  • Cascade information about the plan to others: e.g. to colleagues, other parents/carers, other agencies

  • Attend stakeholder events and encourage others to get involved

  • Hold stakeholder events

  • Tell us how we
can best access the views of the various groups/ communities you represent

  • Help us to find the most effective way of ensuring the plan is informed by and linked to local initiatives, plans and priorities; and/orJoin one of the working groups

SOUTH of ENGLAND SHOW  -  June 11- 13 2009
South of England Showground, Ardingly

Are there any young people in your organisation who would like to perform at this year's South of England Show?

Once again West Sussex Youth Service and WSCVYS are working in partnership and we are looking for young people aged 12-18 years who can sing or dance or act or DJ/MC or....??
They will need to be available during the daytime on the Friday or Saturday, and would get:
  • Free entry to the South of England Show for the day
  • A chance to perform in front of an audience
  • A chance to find out what else is available for young people in the area
Thursday is sports, activities and workshops day.

We recognise that the Friday of the Show is a school day and the young people might require an official letter to give to their School's Head to gain permission to perform at the Show.  If this is required please contact Sally Blackmore.

For further information or if you have any questions please contact either Sally or Trevor England at WSCVYS, or download the application form here.

Aiming High for Disabled Children

Do you work with families who have disabled children?  Do you
think their needs may be missed in the Aiming High Agenda?

The VCS is an important stakeholder in this consultation and we need to ensure as many organisations as possible are included to enable our families to have a voice.  What does your organisation do?  Who do you work with?  We want to highlight the existing services for disabled children against the priorities identified by parents andcarers in a recent West Sussex Survey.

From this basket of providers we will identify gaps in services and compile a list of stakeholders for future consultation events around Aiming High in West Sussex which will be the starting point for the initial commissioning process.

Please contact Jane as soon as possible for further information.

  • Printable help sheets that tell you the basics
  • Posters and leaflets for distribution to donors

'Awards for All' Grants to be replaced
The Awards for All England programme will close on 31 March 2009. From 1 April 2009 each of the lottery distributors supporting the scheme will have their own small grants programmes up and running. Applications can still be made under the current arrangements until 31 March 2009.
The change will mean that each distributor can better address the needs of their applicants and the themes they support. Overall, across all the distributors, it is anticipated that new money available for small grants in 2009-10 will be comparable to money that was available to community groups through Awards for All in 2008-2009.
To ensure this change will be as seamless as possible, the distributors will each run their own small grants programme as follows:
Big Lottery Fund will launch a new small grants programme on 1 April 2009 awarding grants of £300 to £10,000 to local communities in 2009-2010.
Sport England will provide small grants for sports ranging from £300 - £10,000 from 1 April 2009.
Arts Council England will provide small grants through their existing 'Grants for the arts' programme, supporting awards between £1,000 and £100,000.
Heritage Lottery Fund small grants will be provided through the existing 'Your Heritage' (£3,000 to £50,000) and 'Young Roots (£3,000 to £25,000) schemes.

Full details of the Big Lottery Fund programmes and grant awards are available at www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

NEED HELP WITH YOUR I.T?

WSCVYS has recently been fortunate to work with SCIP, a not-for-profit company dedicated to improving IT access, training and skills across the VCS, and we would like to recommend to you our new-found friends.

SCIP's goal is to help staff and volunteers from VCS organisations to use IT in ways which help deliver better services and support to people working in the VCS.   We have found the staff to be very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable - and wonderfully calm when confronted by a misbehaving PC and a slightly hysterical WSCVYS administrator.

For more information see www.scip.org.uk

Andy Caldow
WSCVYS Targeted Youth Work Lead

One piece of work I'm focusing on is working with Mind in Mid Sussex on developing a training packing involving young people on their experiences of the Mental Health system. It is intended that this will also include developing resources that can be used with practitioners around mental, emotional health and resilience.

I am also working on developing services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Sexually Unsure young people (LGBTU). Initially, with our partners, we need the views of LGBTU young people to evaluate their needs and develop specific services across West Sussex.

To get involved and for further information or to lend your support to either of these projects please contact Andy.
