VCS REPRESENTATION IN THE CHILDREN'S TRUST
Compact In Action has requested that the process for VCS representation is consistent across the sector. It has been requested that the current Children's Trust arangements be rolled forward for one year while a county-wide protocol can be developed and introduced. Your thoughts on this interim arrangement are welcome - please email Hanna

Children and Young People's Workforce Development Seminar
Monday 7 December
The Y Centre,  Horsham

This event is open to all private, voluntary and independent organisations in West Sussex.    
The seminar will utilise the One Children's Workforce Self Assessment (the rainbow tool) to generate discussion around new ways of working and the support we need to develop the children's workforce in West Sussex.

HYPER springs to action
The Springboard Project, Horsham, is to be presented with a cheque for £535, by young people from HYPER (Horsham Youth Council) on Monday 16 November.
 
The money was raised by HYPER at an event night in the summer for The Springboard Project. The organisation, which is a local volunteer based charity that offers activities for disabled children and young people, will be spending the money on trips and outings for their Horsham Buddy Scheme, which provides local disabled teenagers with positive activities during term time after school and at weekends.

NCVYS is now recruiting for Young Advocates
Do you work with young people aged between 18-25? NCVYS is looking for one Young person who would like to take on the challenge of being a Young Advocate.
 
This programme is part of the Changemakers Future Leaders Programme and is for a young person who would enjoy working in organisations that value a young person's ideas and opinions.
 
The Young Advocate will work with NCVYS staff and will help NCVYS improve its policy and practice regarding young people.
 
The project will last for six months and the young advocate will be paid £50.00 a day plus reasonable expenses.

In February we are hosting a training day for VCS organisations. The topics are 'Challenging Diversity' facilitated by NCVYS and 'Hear by Rights' from Participation Works.  17 or 24 February tbc.

The annualRotary Youth Poetry Competition 2010 opens Monday 18 January 2010.  Applications to be submitted by Saturday 27 March 2010.
 
The theme is "People in other lands" . There are three age categories and prizes will be given.  Details and rules are available from Waterstones in Chichester or from www.rotarypoetry.info.

South of England Show 2010
Next year's Show will be held on 10-12 June and the WSCVYS & Youth Service stand will feature an arts element.  We will be looking for groups producing arts projects to be involved and to exhibit at the Show.  More details of this project - and all the other aspects of our Stand - will be published over the coming months.

Participation Works' free national conference: 
Five Years On - What's Changed for Children and Young People?

This one-day conference brings together Directors of Children's Services, Lead Councillors and senior managers to review the changes that have taken place since the Children Act 2004. The conference will identify what has worked well and what still needs to be done to ensure that the views and opinions of children and young people help to shape and influence policy and practice. Interactive round-table discussions will be led by experts including the Ministry of Justice, Play England, NCB and the Look Listen Change Consortium.

The Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) is launching a social networking guide to help children's professionals communicate effectively with young people online.
Social Media Youth Participation in Local Democracy, is available as a pamphlet and online. Creating a blog, using social networking sites such as Facebook and uploading videos to YouTube are among the issues covered.
