SHIFTING SANDS: making sense of a changing environment
WSCVYS held a very successful and - we hope - useful conference at Lodge Hill on 1 November.  For those of you who were unable to attend - read all about it!

The WSCC Youth Service VS Advisors are offering CRB checks to affiliated WSCVYS members for one year from December.  Contact Marney Lowe or Debra Beardall for details.

British Youth Council views on latest youth unemployment figures and more 

Sportivate is a campaign that captures the excitement of the London 2012 Games, providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults to receive 6-8 weeks of coaching in a sport of their choice and guiding them into regular participation within their community.


Reaching for Gold is a competition for young people in the South East region to enter an idea for a product, service or other that will benefit other people. The best ideas will be selected and the teams will be paired up with business, voluntary and community sector mentors for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Deadline is 5pm on 30 November.


sported. is now open for membership in West/East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. The services offered by sported. to members include on line resources to help develop projects, a team to offer information and advice, a small grants scheme and for some members one to one mentor support. sported. has also a funding stream (up to £2000) aimed at providing increased support to its member organisations.  


TeenBiz is the UK's first business start up scheme aimed at teens 13-18.  From 1 January every month two students will receive up to £500 start up funding, a business mentor and a start up pack.  Winners will also receive a Natwest Business Bank Account. TeenBiz aims to provide talented young entrepreneurs a step on the ladder.

Review of Central Government's implementation of the Compact  The National Audit Office is conducting a study of Compact working across government, and wants voluntary and community sector input.

The Schools Questions and Answers Challenge uses the format of BBC ONE's Question Time and BBC Radio 4's Any Questions? as the basis for learning key citizenship life skills and political literacy - look at the website here.

Public health plan engagement A five year public health plan is being developed that establishes the aspirations of all partners involved in Public Health in making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of residents in West Sussex.

The HORSHAM YOUNG PERSON'S ADVOCACY SERVICE is now fully operational following a successful pilot. The service is there to support young people get their views and wishes heard when decisions are being made that affect their lives and they don't feel listened to or need someone to come alongside them as they work out how to deal with a situation they are facing.


SkillShare West Sussex is a new web based tool to complement the volunteer centre service.  This new service is aimed at those wanting to give a small amount of time, between 1 and 10 days.

EVENTS 


North West Sussex Commissioning Association is inviting you to an event on 29 November to hear the latest on national and local developments in the NHS from local GPs, nurses and managers, and to have your say on what the priorities should be for local health services.


WSCVYS is launching its VCS Children's & Young People's Disability and Inclusion Forum, with an initial meeting at Horsham Youth Centre on Tuesday 13 December, 10:30am-12:30pm.  If you work or volunteer in the VCS and are interested in being involved with this Forum, then please email Daniel Cheesman  


NCVYS is hosting a free Best Practice Sharing event on Thursday 16 February 2012 from 10am-3pm. This day is for young people aged between 11- 25 and adults to come together to discuss engaging young people within their organisations and region.

FUNDING 


The WSCVYS trustees have decided to end the WSCVYS Small Grants programme in favour of a more targeted approach.  Do watch this space for funding opportunities.

Awards for All, England

No deadlines, a rolling programme. Decisions usually made within 30 days of receiving a complete application. No match funding required.

Offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that improve communities, and the lives of people within them. It is for voluntary and community groups, schools and health organisations, parish and town councils.
